What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Hair Restoration?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) hair restoration is a medical treatment aimed at stimulating hair growth in individuals experiencing hair loss or thinning. The procedure uses the patient's own blood, which is processed to concentrate the platelets—a component of blood rich in growth factors. The high concentration of growth factors in platelet-derived growth factors promote hair regrowth by stimulating stem cells in dormant hair follicle to grow new hair. Because it is made with our own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is minimal.

The Procedure

A small amount of blood is taken from the patient's arm. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge, which spins at high speed to separate the plasma from the red blood cells and other components. The plasma portion is further processed to increase the concentration of platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the scalp where hair thinning or loss is noticeable. Proteins are released from the platelet-derived growth factor solution almost immediately and begin to stimulate hair follicles. The procedure requires no down time and causes minimal side effects. You may experience some swelling, pain and bruising after the procedure which tend to resolve within a few days. Multiple  treatments have been found to be the most successful. Researchers have found that most patients who get results have 3 or more treatments over 4-6 months; followed by maintenance treatments every 4-6 months have the best results.
